A utility-scale plant repeats the same electrical details thousands of times. That repetition creates speed, but it also lets one poor method spread across an entire site. DC cable quality depends on approved materials, trained installers, controlled tools, protected routing and records that connect every test result to a real string.

Lock the cable and connector system

Confirm cable type, voltage rating, environmental exposure, connector family and manufacturer-approved mating combinations before mobilisation. Similar-looking connectors should not be assumed compatible.

Define stripping dimensions, crimp tooling, calibration, pull-check method and sample frequency in the work instruction. First-off inspections catch a systematic error before production accelerates.

Route for protection and maintainability

Cables need controlled bend radius, support spacing, separation from sharp edges, protection at structure transitions and sufficient clearance from the ground. Loops must not collect water, rub against moving parts or obstruct access.

Where DC routes enter trenches or equipment, coordinate civil levels, ducts, sealing and identification. A good route remains inspectable and replaceable after vegetation growth and years of operation.

Test by traceable string and zone

Polarity, continuity, insulation resistance and string values should be recorded against the approved string map. Exceptions need investigation, correction and retest—not a generic note at the end of the day.

Releasing completed zones after inspection keeps defects local and allows inverter commissioning to start with a reliable DC field.

Build the as-built record during installation

Redlines, cable schedules, test files, connector batches, tool logs and nonconformance closure should be updated as work progresses. Reconstructing them at handover loses detail and delays energisation.

The final record gives commissioning and O&M teams a practical map for fault finding instead of a folder disconnected from the installed plant.

/ FAQ

Can different PV connector brands be mated?

Only when the combination is explicitly approved for the project by the responsible parties and manufacturers. Visual similarity is not evidence of compatibility.

Which DC tests are required?

The exact scope follows design, contract, local rules and applicable standards. It commonly includes visual inspection, polarity, continuity, insulation resistance and string verification.
